Descendants of William Crispin

First Generation

1.       William1 Crispin birth date unknown.

The only known source of information is his son’s marriage certificate, which lists his father’s occupation as either printer or painter.

He married Betsy Crispin?  The only known source of information about her is Frederick’s baptism record.

William Crispin and Betsy had the following children:

+          2        i.             Frederick Sorrell2 Crispin was born Moretonhampstead in About 1832.

Second Generation

2.       Frederick Sorrell2 Crispin (William1) was almost certainly born in Moretonhampstead, Devon (although the 1881 census gives his birthplace as Ivybridge) in About 1832.  He was christened on 03 June 1832 in Moretonhampstead; his mother’s name was given as Betsy Crispin but his father’s name is not given.  According to the 1901 census his place of birth was Moretonhampstead.

He married Maria Jane Hood at Darenth Kent on 16 May 1853 (second quarter 1853, Dartford, Vol2a, P349).  She was recorded as Jane on her marriage certificate and in the 1861 and 1881 censuses but Maria J in the 1901 census.  She was born in Darenth, Kent in About 1834, the daughter of John Hood, a labourer.  She died aged 73 at 22 Clifton Road, Margate on 13 April 1907 (second quarter 1907, Thanet, Vol2a, P582).

Frederick was a master papermaker at the paper mill at Wookey Hole, the manufacturer of the specialist paper for the Bank of England notes.  He seems to have travelled the country widely, presumably in pursuit of work.

At the 1861 census (RG09/468, Folio 5, Page 5) he was aged 29 and living at South End Cottages, Darenth, Kent with his wife and three eldest children, Sam, Henrietta and Harriett.

At the 1881 census he was aged 49 and living at Railway Terrace, Alton, Hampshire.  Also living with him and his family were his grand daughter, Florence Foote (aged 1 and born in Alton – it is not clear who her parents were) and 3 lodgers.  In 1887 the family was living in Afon-wen a village in the parish of Caerwys, near Holywell.

At the 1901 census he was retired aged 68 and living at 4, Sandling Road, Maidstone, Kent with Jane and their sons Wilfred and Harry.

Frederick Crispin died aged 75 at 48 Salisbury Road, Maidstone on 9 July 1905 (third quarter 1905, Maidstone, Vol2a, P440).

Frederick Crispin and Jane Hood had the following children:

4        i.             Samuel3 Crispin was born at Carshalton, Surrey on 03 November 1854.  He was described as a scholar, aged 6 at the 1861 census, but there appears to be no record of him at the 1881 census.

5       ii.             Henrietta Crispin was born at Darenth, Kent on 29 October 1856.  Her married name was Clarkson and she had a daughter called May.  The only possible entry in the 1881 census is Henr[i]etta Clarkson, aged 27 born in Faversham, married to Thomas Clarkson, a lighterman aged 24 and living at 449 Southwark Pk Rd, Bermondsey, Surrey.

6      iii.             Harriett Crispin was born at Darenth, Kent on 29 September 1858.  Harriette, aged 22, was working as a Nurse Dom Serv Inst Service at the Earlswood Asylum for Idiots, Reigate, Surrey at the 1881 census.  Also working there was Nicholas Thurling, who married her younger sister, Phoebe

10   vii.             Phoebe Crispin was born at Sundridge End on 03 December 1865 (fourth quarter 1865, Sevenoaks, Vol2a, P470), although the 1901 census gives her place of birth as Dartford. 11  viii.             Naomi Crispin was born in Wookey Hole, Somerset on 29 September 1868.  She died in about 1930.  She married either Frederic Hale Collins or George Charles Dickinson (fourth quarter 1897, Fulham, Vol1a, P677).
