First Generation
1. William1 Crispin birth
date unknown.
The only known source of information is his son’s marriage
certificate, which lists his father’s occupation as either printer or painter.
He married Betsy
Crispin? The only known source of
information about her is Frederick’s
baptism record.
William Crispin and Betsy had the following children:

Second Generation
2. Frederick Sorrell2
Crispin (William1) was
almost certainly born in Moretonhampstead, Devon
(although the 1881 census gives his birthplace as Ivybridge) in About
1832. He was christened on 03 June 1832
in Moretonhampstead; his mother’s name was given as Betsy Crispin but his
father’s name is not given. According to
the 1901 census his place of birth was Moretonhampstead.
He married Maria Jane
Hood at Darenth Kent on
16 May 1853 (second quarter 1853, Dartford,
Vol2a, P349). She was recorded as Jane
on her marriage certificate and in the 1861 and 1881 censuses but Maria J in
the 1901 census. She was born in Darenth, Kent
in About 1834, the daughter of John Hood, a labourer. She died aged 73 at 22 Clifton Road, Margate
on 13 April 1907 (second quarter 1907, Thanet, Vol2a, P582).
Frederick was a master papermaker at the
paper mill at Wookey Hole, the manufacturer of the specialist paper for the
Bank of England notes. He seems to have travelled the country widely,
presumably in pursuit of work.
At the 1861 census (RG09/468, Folio 5, Page 5) he was aged 29
and living at South End Cottages, Darenth, Kent with his wife and three eldest
children, Sam, Henrietta and Harriett.
At the 1881 census he was aged 49 and living at Railway
Terrace, Alton,
Hampshire. Also living with him and his
family were his grand daughter, Florence Foote (aged 1 and born in Alton – it is not clear
who her parents were) and 3 lodgers. In
1887 the family was living in Afon-wen
a village in the parish of Caerwys, near Holywell.
At the 1901 census he was retired aged 68 and living at 4, Sandling Road, Maidstone,
Kent with
Jane and their sons Wilfred and Harry.
Frederick Crispin died aged 75 at 48 Salisbury Road, Maidstone on 9 July
1905 (third quarter 1905, Maidstone, Vol2a,
P440).
Frederick Crispin and Jane Hood had the following children:
4 i. Samuel3 Crispin was born at Carshalton, Surrey
on 03 November 1854. He was described as
a scholar, aged 6 at the 1861 census, but there appears to be no record of him
at the 1881 census.
5 ii. Henrietta Crispin was born at Darenth, Kent
on 29 October 1856. Her married name was
Clarkson and she had a daughter called May.
The only possible entry in the 1881 census is Henr[i]etta Clarkson, aged
27 born in Faversham, married to Thomas Clarkson, a lighterman aged 24 and living
at 449 Southwark Pk Rd, Bermondsey, Surrey.
6 iii. Harriett Crispin was born at Darenth, Kent
on 29 September 1858. Harriette, aged
22, was working as a Nurse Dom Serv Inst Service at the Earlswood Asylum for
Idiots, Reigate, Surrey at the 1881 census. Also working there was Nicholas Thurling, who
married her younger sister, Phoebe
7 iv. Albert Crispin was born on 12
November 1860 (fourth quarter 1860, Dartford,
Vol2a, P260) and died 2 days later.
8 v. Ernest Crispin was born at Darenth, Kent
on 20 January 1862 (first quarter 1862, Dartford,
Vol2a, P283). He was an unmarried
papermaker, aged 19, living with his parents at the 1881 census. The death of an Ernest Crispin in Malling,
aged 31 is recorded (fourth quarter 1893, Malling, Vol2a, P393). It is not certain but seems likely that this
is the same person.

Crispin was born at Darenth, Kent in 1864 (first quarter 1864, Dartford, Vol2a, P305).
10 vii. Phoebe Crispin was born at
Sundridge End on 03 December 1865 (fourth quarter 1865, Sevenoaks, Vol2a,
P470), although the 1901 census gives her place of birth as Dartford.
She was a scholar aged 15 at the 1881 census.
She married Nicholas Thurling (third quarter 1884, Maidstone,
Vol2a, P1067). He was born at Newington, London
in About 1850. They had 2 sons: John,
born in Maidstone in About 1885; and Frederick (first quarter 1889, Maidstone,
Vol2a, P750); and 3 daughters: Billie; Maude, born in Maidstone in About 1887
and whose married name was Beadon; and Mary May (first quarter 1894, Maidstone,
Vol2a, P762). They were living in Margate at the 1901
census, where Nicholas was working as a general labourer and John was a
fitter’s apprentice. Frederick is thought to have been killed in
the First World War.
11 viii. Naomi Crispin was born in Wookey
Hole, Somerset
on 29 September 1868. She died in about
1930. She married either Frederic Hale
Collins or George Charles Dickinson (fourth quarter 1897, Fulham, Vol1a, P677).
12 ix. Ambrose Jesse Crispin was born in
Wookey Hole, Somerset
on 31 May 1870 (second quarter 1870, Wells, Vol5c, P599). Ambrose is the name given by Winifred
Baldwin; Jesse appears on the 1881 census when he was a 10-year-old
scholar. There is no record of him at
the 1901 census.
13 x. Mabel Crispin was born in Wookey Hole,
Somerset on 27
April 1872. She died on 19 December the
same year.

Crispin was born in Wookey Hole, Somerset
on 31 December 1873.
+ 15 xii. Harry
Walter Crispin was born in Alton, Hampshire on
26 February 1875 (first quarter 1875, Alton,
Vol2c, P151).
Third Generation
9. Frederick3 Crispin
(Frederick2, William1) was born at Darenth, Kent
in 1864 (first quarter 1864, Dartford, Vol2a,
P305).
He was an unmarried papermaker, aged 17, living with his
parents at the 1881 census. In 1887 Frederick
was working in a paper mill in Flintshire close to where Wilfred was
apprenticed in Holywell
He married Sarah Ellen
Rogers (third quarter 1884, Holywell, Vol11b, P317). She was known as Sally and was born at
Ysceifiog, Flintshire in About 1863.
At the 1901 census he was living in Maidstone
and described as a vatman paper maker.
Frederick Crispin and Sarah Rogers had the following children:
16 i. Robert4 Crispin was born unknown. Robert married Joan and had a daughter named
Freda.
17 ii. Thomas Crispin was born in
Ysceifiog Flintshire in About 1885. He
was a Railway Clerk at the 1901 census.
18 iii. Arthur Ernest Crispin was born in
Caerwys Flintshire in 1886 (second quarter 1886, Holywell, Vol11b, P227). He was a papermaker’s apprentice at the 1901
census.
14. Wilfred3 Crispin (Frederick2, William1) was born in Wookey Hole, Somerset on 31 December
1873.
He was a scholar, aged 7 at the 1881 census. On 31 May1887 he was apprenticed as a papermaker to Mrs. Anne Appleby Jones
of Pishill in the parish of Holywell in the county of Flint. By the 1901
census he was a papermaker living with his parents in Maidstone. He later moved to Cornworthy, Devon.
He married Kate Ethel
Turner (Kathleen?) on 30 May 1903 at Maidstone,
Kent (second quarter 1903, Maidstone, Vol2a, P1660). She died on 20
November 1950 in Plumstead, where she was living with her son and his family.
Winifred Crispin said that he died in 1930. However, according to his grandson, Peter, Wilfred was declared of unsound mind
(as a result of his wartime experiences?) and placed in Deepway
Mental Hospital in Exmouth, Devon in 1919. Commital
continued after the mental health act of 1926, and a Court Order of 1939
(pension age) made his wife responsible for all decisions concerning him (this
gave him 2/6 of his pension as pocket money, the remainder plus income from
property going to his wife). He died in "Deepway",
Exmouth on 02 November 1950.
Wilfred Crispin and Kate Turner had the following children:

15. Harry Walter3
Crispin (Frederick2,
William1) was born in Alton, Hampshire on 26
February 1875.
At the 1881 census he was living with his parents at Railway
Terrace, Alton.
At the 1901 census he was living with his parents at 4, Sandling Road, Maidstone. His
occupation was given as hairdresser, working at home on his own account. He was described as a Hairdresser (Master) on
his son Geoffrey’s birth certificate.
His son Geoffrey Crispin remembered, as a child, reading (principally
Charles Dickens) to him because he was blind.
He married Ellen
Harding on 15 August 1904 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Berkhamsted,
Hertfordshire (third quarter 1904, Berkhamsted, Vol3a, P1586). [See Harding
descendants file.] She was born at 14, Walton Road,
Aylesbury on 20 February 1880, the daughter of Joseph Harding, a shoemaker, and
Sarah Freeman. She died on 5 May 1955 at
“Crossways”, Ryders Avenue,
Westgate-on-Sea, Kent
(second quarter 1955, Thanet, Vol5b, P731).
Harry Crispin died aged 47 at his home: 36 Malling Road, Snodland on 24 November
1922 (fourth quarter 1922, Malling, Vol2a, P869).
Harry Crispin and Ellen Harding had the following children:

in Snodland, Kent on 15 May 1905 (second quarter

Fourth Generation
19. John
Frederick4 Crispin was born on 16 May 1912 in Cornworthy, Devon. He was
known as Jack, at least by his cousin Geoffrey.
He married Beatrice
Martha Beauchamp in 1939. She died
in the early 1980s.
They lived in
Plumstead for most of their lives, although they moved to Isleworth when
Beatrice was evacuated there with the War Office, returning to Plumstead in
1947.
John Crispin died in the early 1980s.
John Crispin and Beatrice Beauchamp had the following
children:

February 1943.
23 ii. John Richard Crispin
was born in 1946 and died the same year.
20. Geoffrey Hollis4 Crispin (Harry3,
Frederick2, William1) was born at 2, Malling Road, Snodland,
Kent (in the
Malling District) on 15 May 1905.
He married Winifred Baldwin on 15 August 1931 in St Peter’s Church,
Berkhamsted (third quarter 1931, Berkhamsted, Vol3a, P3168). [See Baldwin descendants
file.] She was the daughter of Alfred
John Baldwin and Kate Gertrude Humphrey.
At the time of their marriage Geoffrey was living at The Friary, Charles Street,
Berkhamsted and Winifred was living at 149 High Street, Berkhamsted. The witnesses to their marriage were Max
Harding Crispin and Kathleen Baldwin.
She died aged 86 in Hemel
Hempstead General Hospital on 12 July 1992 (Jul 1992,
Dacorum, Vol10, P133, Ent No 792).
On his marriage certificate he was described
as a Secretary to Public Companies. He
was a barrister, Queen’s Counsel and Recorder of Rochester, Kent. They lived in The Tile House, Chipperfield,
Herts.
He died aged 70 in Hemel Hempstead General
Hospital, Hertfordshire
on 16 April 1976 (Jun 1975, Dacorum, Vol10, P107).
Geoffrey Crispin and Winifred Baldwin
had the following children:
24 i. Shirley Kathleen5 Crispin was born in
Berkhamsted on 12 August 1932. She
married Paddy Clark, son of Cecil Clark and Anne Latton. They had 4 children: Penelope, Jacqueline,
Timothy and Jeremy.

born in Abbots Langley, Herts on 28 May 1935.
26 iii. Nicholas Crispin was born in Abbots
Langley, Herts on 20 February 1944.
21. Max
Harding4 Crispin (Harry3, Frederick2,
William1) was born in
Berkhamsted on 20 July 1907.
He married Mary
Elizabeth Wiltshire.
Max Crispin and Mary Wiltshire had the following children:

unknown. She married Anthony Cartwright
on 23 April 1962 at Hayling
Island, Hampshire. They had 2 children; Sarah and Emma.
28 ii. Margaret Crispin was born
unknown. She married Edward Martin Wyer
on 8 September 1962 at Hayling
Island, Hampshire. They had 2 children; Andrew and Allison.
Fifth Generation
22. Peter John5 Crispin was born
in Plumstead? on 21 February 1943.
He worked in the brewing industry, initially in production and later in
consultancy to the industry. In 2000 he
took early retirement and ran The Royal Oak at Dacre Bank, near Harrowgate with
his daughter and son-in-law.
He married Patricia Ruth Tucker on 04 March 1967.
Peter Crispin and Patricia Tucker had the following children:

Richard6 Crispin was born on 04 September 1968.
30 ii. Anna
Michelle Crispin was born on 14 November 1970.
She married Stephen Cock on 19 February 2004 and they run a pub in
partnership with her parents.
25. Michael Julian5
Crispin (Geoffrey4,
Harry3, Frederick2, William1) was born in Abbots
Langley, Hertfordshire on 28 May 1935.
He was always known as Julian
He married Janice
Caroline (Jane) Munday on 6 January 1961 at South
Mimms, Hertfordshire. She
was born on 12 August 1937, the daughter of Michael Munday and Caroline
Ferres. [See Munday descendants file.] She
trained as a nurse and later as a teacher.
He was an insurance broker in the City of London and underwriters’ agent at Lloyds of
London. They lived for most of their
lives in Lewisham, London.
Julian Crispin and Jane Munday had the following children:

She was born in Bath, Somerset on 27 May 1965, the daughter of
